Key will not turn!

I have never had a problem with my ignition switch before today. The key will not turn. I have an extra key and it will also not work. The car is in park and I have the brake depressed. I checked for blown fuses and none appear to be blown. What should I do next?

I would wiggle the shifter and possibly the steering wheel and try the key several times and take it out and flip it over and try it again, if you still can't turn it then the ignition lock cylinder will have to come out and be repaired or replaced.

Re: Key will not turn!

I had the same issue too...It happened after I accidently shut the car off in a parking lot while I was still in drive. I had to put the car in park to take the key out, then when I went to restart it the key didn't turn. I had to try it a few times and at one point, the key didn't even want to come out of the ignition. These lock cylinders they use in the Malibu's, GA's, and Aleros are crappy...

Re: Key will not turn!

It's pretty costly on these cars because the Passlock system works through the lock cylinder. I think they are like $250 to have replaced. You could however do it on your own.

Ok..this is what I found out.

The problems "UNKNOWN" my car is going to dealership on Sunday Night to be fixed. They said that its is very costy, because if they have to replace the lock cylinder, the computer programs has to be reprogramed and run some test couple times. I just hope that its $250....that I can handle, Freakazoid!! I need to replace my tires too...that's alot of "Bling Bling" going out of my pocket.

thx

This may be a stupid ? ,but is you steering wheel turned hard to one side and locked? If so you may have to turn the wheel as far as you can in the same direction and see if the key will turn.

I'm sorry..not that much of dope or ever smoked a dope.

Its not I can't turn the key to start the car.

When I'm parking the car, I have to turn the car off, right? my key gets stuck in ACC. (when you see your Alero key ignition it goes OFF-ACC-ON-START) I have to giggle the key on ACC area then something releases it and key comes out.

Some one told me that I might have to replace my lock cylinder.

thx

fixed mine for 1.99

I had the same thing with my 02 alero. I called AAA and they told me to put the key in the ignition and give it a nice solid "wack" with the heel of a shoe, as if you were hitting a nail with a hammer. (just not that hard) then keep on wiggling the key. It took about 45 mintues of wiggling, but low & behold it worked. Then a few days later the same thing. I spoke to my local mechanic and suggested putting a little powered graphite in the ignition. I did that and have not had a problem since. $1.99 solved the problem completely. Hope it works.

Re: Key will not turn!

Yep, that graphite is all I've used in GM lock tumblers. It's good stuff.
