I have a 1987 camry and just come up with a recent problem. When I go above 55 mph there I start to burn oil, alot of oil but under 55mph nothing happens. I was thinking a seal of some sort but I am just shooting this thought. Engine temp stays low and the car really bogs when this happens. Any body out there with some idea what I could be lookin at? I was thinking head gasket but this doesn't happen till above 55 mph.

make sure you have a thermostat if the engine temp stays low....the cylinder walls might not be getting hot enough and the rings not expanding fully. This will allow blow by and force oil into the pcv valve, and then all the excess oil to be deliverd into the cylinder causing your problem..This is also a condition of excess wear on the motor. You can add some 80 or 90 weight oil to the motor and help to thicken it up to where it wont atomize as easily and stick to the cylinder to help with the lost compression.

Thanks so much that make alot of sense. Why, because the water pump is leaking and the car does over heat easily. But the temp raises and loweres sparaticly. Would I have to replace the pvc valve now as well along with the water pump and the tromostate? As far as oil the heavier wieght will help stop the blow by right, so what are we talking here 5w-30, 10w-40...? Thanks for your respone look forward to your help again...

Replace the water pump and the thermostat (and probably the PCV valve) initially. Then see what happens. If it solves the problem with oil burning, then forget about it.

Make sure you have not overfilled the crankcase. This might give such a symptom as oil burning at higher rpm.

Use 20w-50 oil and make sure you get the water leak fixed..I always replace the thermostat when i do a water pump. The pcv is a good idea. im sure it has all kinds of nasty sludge in it..Fix these items and see what you come up with and let us know..

Thanks guys I will change those things asap. Are you saying to replace all the oil to 20w-50 or just add one pint of that oil to the existing 10w-30 oil? Sorry for the confustion.

I don't think changing your 4 quarts of 10w-30 oil to 20w-50 oil is anywhere near the solution. Installing a new water pump and thermostat is the best answer. I had an 87 Camry 4-cylinder and I also have a 92 Camry 4-cylinder. One of them, now I can't remember which, had a PCV "system" and the other one had a PCV valve. Your Haynes manual should tell you which is which. If it has the system there's not much you can do with it. If it's the valve, then of course you can either clean it or replace it. Personally, for the money, I would go ahead and replace it. Best of luck.
