Angry Theft light comes on....car doesn't start, just cranks!

When starting the car the theft light comes on and the car just cranks but does not start!! It's a 1996 Grand Am. Does this have anything to do with the ignition or is there anything else that can be checked?

According to the dealership repair manual, it could be either the passlock, ecm,or the instrument cluster. all 3 of these could prevent the car from starting..

OK, just leave the key on for ten mins. the light should be on steady, once it is it's ready to start...
F.Y.I. hook up a battery charger...

I had the same problem, took it to the pontiac dealer and they said it was the ignition switch from
a recall. They said the switch had 2 burned sensors
in the switch! REPLACED FOR FREE! We will see, so far so gooooood!

turn the ignition switch to on for about 10-15 min. When the light starts to blink or ding, remove the key. Then get someone to jump your car or a battery charger and it should start right up. don't forget to remove the key before trying to start it up again.
