interference vs non-interference

In one of the threads a while back I remember a discussion concerning timing belt failures and it's effect on the 2.2L 4-cylinder engine. What was the final conclusion, is the Camry engine a non-interference or interference type?

I have the original timing belt still on this 1999 Camry. I'm told to get it replaced by 60,000 km. I'm close at 57,200 and the belt is very noisy. I'm hoping to change it next month although Toyota says I don't need to change it until 90,000 km.

Should I be concerned about belt failure and go in right away?

Thank you,
Bill

Re: interference vs non-interference

Bill,

The 5SFE engine is a non-interference type of engine; meaning that if the timing belt breaks, the engine will just stop and there will be no damage done to the internals of the engine. It will however, be time for a tow truck.

As far as the timing belt change interval, I called Toyota corporate myself on this issue a few months back as my 98 Camry had reached 60,000 miles. Corporate told me that they recommend changing the belt somewhere between 60,000 and 90,000 miles.
