I take it that she has an auto trans? Could be low trans fluid level, or with electronic transmissions, could be a blown fuse. Check the fuse box in the engine compartment.

How many miles does she have on it??? If she is the original owner, she has until 100k miles on powertrain, 2nd owner only till 60k miles. She probably needs a new transmission or pulse generators (input & output sensors). I see the pulse generator problem with those all the time. Much cheaper than replacing the transmission. Take it to your Hyundai dealership and let them take a look at it.

Also, try looking to see if there was a recall, I know that Hyundais are renown for automatic transmission problems. Here is a link: Canadian Government Recall Site (http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/recalls/search_e.asp)

I am considering purchasing a 2000 Accent hatchback. I didn't get to test drive it because it needed wheel studs replaced on the right front hub. But when I put it into reverse and drive sitting still in the shop, it took an extra second to drop into gear, and when I went from reverse to drive, it felt like it shifted twice. I'll get a full test drive on it next weekend after they fix the studs this week. Would this hesitation to go into gear be a sign of these input/output sensors going bad?

I don't know why any one would by an auto on anything but a dodge cummins truck where you will fry the clutch. Come on people no more autos, and I don't care if its a manufhsift or what ever.
