97 540i sound system

I just bought this car and discovered very poor sound quality in all modes. THe system is apparently a non DSP/6 cd changer multi speaker system. Has anyone experienced simialer problems or replaced+ upgraded their speakers or amp. I hate to get the dealers opinion as the local dealer has notoriously poor/crooked service dept

Re: 97 540i sound system

Think about adding a sub. Instant fix to BMWs lack of performance

97 540 Sound System

The stereo in my 97 528 also had poor sound quality. I replaced the speakers and the amp. I also added a sub. The sound is much better but not excellent. I experienced problems with the bmw head unit and the new speakers. The technician that did the installation suggested that a new head unit would do the trick. Others have also suggested new head units solved the problem.
