Unhappy Transmission problem?

I've had it seems an occuring problem (only in winter months) I have a 99 GC with 64k on it. Doesn't shift out of 2nd gear until it warms up at least 5 minutes. Both "5 star dealers" said I need a new transmission, that my seals and clutch are bad. (I had a new seal put on it last year)
any ideas would be of help.
thanks

Re: Transmission problem?

I have a 2000 with the same symptoms. I looked into it and found it's the way the tranny is designed. At temperatures below 30 it takes roughly 5min. At 50mph the engine is revving well into the 2000 rpm range--feels like 2nd gear but it might be 3rd. You might not have an issue at all---is it a recent problem?

Re: Transmission problem?

If you do decide you have a problem, try a transmission fluid and filter change first. Many (but not all) cases of erratic shifting can be fixed this way.

Re: Transmission problem?

I have 93 Grand Chek and this started happening after we took it in for the 90K service where they replaced all the fluids and inspected the trans. Never had the problem before then. Fun to pay $800 for service and come away with a problem. I just drive easy for a mile or so and it goes away. I don't have any leaks anywhere and some where I read about it being a know service problem. I think this dealer used the bug to get people to go back and pay more $$$. I stopped going there and am going to do my own.

Re: Transmission problem?

I have a 97 GC and it has been doing that for quiet some time now. I am glad that I am not the only one! I have found when mine does it I let off the gas like you would a manual and it shifts, but I still love my jeep!

There is no problem with your transmission. It states right in the manual that for V8s (if thats what you have) takes a while for it to shift out of second in the cold. Its a safeguard feature for the transmission. I guess those dealers are so much five star now are they...hahaha

Re: Transmission problem?

Which seal did they replace? I have heard the seal that causes this problem is an internal one between clutch pack sections. Good luck
