2000 Blazer...Lousy gas mileage....

I live in the good old Northeast where it's cold....all winter long I have been getting 13-14 mpg highway.....67K miles, original plugs, wires and dist cap and rotor...I just ordered new GM Rapidfire plugs....truck has plenty of power, idles pretty good and runs great....anyone have any ideas what could be wron ? Is this normal ? Thanks.

Hi, I am also from the Norheast. I also own a 2000 Blazer LT. I purchased the truck back in May of 2003. It has 37000 miles on it now. The truck looks and runs great and is in great shape. The gas milelage I get is about the same in city and a little more on highway. I traded a 2000 Malibu that had a 3.1 V6 and the milage wasn't much better. Is yours 4 wheel drive with the electronic transfer case and auto 4 wheel drive?

Yep 4WD with push buttons on the dash.....

Your o2 sensors should be replaced every 50-60k... This can dramatically affect your gas miledge... Check your tire pressure.. Also changing your plugs should help a lot...Rapid fires are great. Don't lay on to the gas, and change your air filter to a k&n drop in.. Your fuel filter should be changed every 20k.... Overall these things should dramitically increase your miledge...

Now, to mods that can help...

Electric Fan...(reccommend a ford taurus fan, but almost any e-fan that outputs 3000cfm or better will be fine)

EGR Mod... This will help with your low end torque and improve gas miledge about 1-3 mpg... and it won't affect your emissions testing You can check it out here http://www.s10planet.com/tech_egr.htm

See how all this works out for you...

Does anyone have any experience with these GM Rapid Fire spark plugs ? How are they compared to the original equipment platinum plugs ? I am wondering if I should get the platinum ones ......I know GM says that they are good for 100K and I only have 67K but I would think it couldn't hurt to change them now anyway....

GM rapid fires are the best plugs that GM-ac/delco makes... They are platinumn tipped... 67k is a good time to change them out...

How many O2 sensors are there? I know of only one (in the exaust). And where is a good place to get them..so far..the best price I've found (locally) is around $53!

I'd just replace 2 sensors, the ones closest to the engine as they're the ones that the PCM uses for fuel mixture

sounds as though your gas mileage is about the same as mine, dont get no better trust me. And all the things that you can do, dont do much for you, just cost lots of money and cause more problems further down the road.

i know the gas they use in the winter is what they call "wintery mix" and what i hear it doesn't matter what you drive you'll get worse mpg... they make it cheap and sell it for more

You don't need to blindly replace O2 sensors, there's a way to check them. An O2 sensor is basically a themistor, that is to say it's a device that converts the heat from your exhaust to a small amount of electricity.
The simple way to check these is with a voltmeter. At idle, measure the voltage where the wire conects to the O2 sensor. It should read approximately 0.45 volts with some fluctuation . If you are getting readings close to zero, it's safe to say that it needs replacement.
