Acceleration problem...bad fuel pump?

Lately I have noticed that the power of my 84 crossfire has gone down significantly. The throttle response is very poor, and it hesitates a lot when I press on the gas. Also, sometimes it takes forever to shift out of first gear. It also runs extremely rough upon start up until it warms up. Someone told me it probably needs a new fuel pump. Does anyone know if that may be the problem?
Thanks-
Greg

Re: Acceleration problem...bad fuel pump?

I have seen a few TBI trucks develop a rough idle that went along w/low fuel pressure problems.
Need to check the fuel filter first to see if that might be the problem. On my '88, it takes a 5/8 and a 13/16 wrench to remove the lines and there might be a bracket that holds it to the body too. It is located to the rear of the right front tire. Since yours is TBI, it could be in a different location. Remove the filter, wipe off the inlet side fitting and try to blow through it, and see what the gas looks like that comes out. If it is brown and hard to blow through, that just might be the prob.
TBI systems run on low fuel pressure, so a restricted filter would cause problems easier than if it was on a TPI system.
Hope this helps,

Thanks, I will look for the filter. The problem seems to be getting worse. The car is getting harder to start and one time when I stepped on the gas, the car completely stalled and almost died.

A plugged filter will usually burn up the pump. Change it asap.
