storage ideasevergreen 12-30-2001, 08:25 PM i am looking for some storage ideas. i have been using a duffle bag to store my tools, tow strap, and spare parts. its starting to fall apart mainly because it weights about 60 lbs now. i would like something that can hold alot of stuff and still be able to take it out if i need the space. thanks IggyB 12-30-2001, 08:45 PM I keep all my recovery and "survival" gear in a couple of Rubbermaid containers. Duffel bag is used for a complete change of clothing. It's convenient, easily organized, taken in and out and so on....... rednec 12-30-2001, 09:03 PM I also use a couple of rubber maid totes. Got them from wal-mart for about 10 bucks a piece. They are the black ones made out of the thicker plastic. I keep my recovery stuff in one and odds and ends in the other. I have a 3rd for whatever else I might need. rhombus 12-30-2001, 11:30 PM I also use a large Rubber Maid to store most of the stuff it the back of the X. I found that two duffle bags worked better for the recovery stuff. (one for chains and one for straps). The bags that I use are from MEC (http://www.mec.ca). They make great stuff and it is resonabley priced. I found the bags easy to take in and out and they do not take up as much space (also the straps get muddy so I like them separate. Here is a bad pic but you will get the idea: http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/attachment.php?s=&postid=103782 The bin get strapped down to the mounting points on the floor. OffroadX 12-30-2001, 11:49 PM The box on the right can be found at Lowe's for $20. It is just short enough to fit lengthwise in the back of the X and still let the door close. It has 2 latches, and is pretty stout. http://home.us.net/~stimpy/xterra/misc/cargo/boxes.jpg The toolbox on the left I got at Home Depot for a nice price too. Holds a ton of crap, including bulky stuff, has wheels, and isn't too big. My only complaint is with the latches, but I'm just too lazy to put a clip on the lock tabs. I think that would make them stop popping open while I carry it (they double as handles). Here's a couple more shots: http://home.us.net/~stimpy/xterra/misc/cargo/locker.jpg http://home.us.net/~stimpy/xterra/misc/cargo/locker2.jpg Brent rrdstarr 12-31-2001, 12:38 AM I have recovery backpack(2 tow straps, Hi-Lift base, JackMate, ARB Hi-Lift attachment, Carhart coveralls, leather gloves, bunji cords, ratchet straps, Army wool blanket). 2 Rubber Maid totes, one for food and one for camping gear. Kerensky97 12-31-2001, 01:46 AM I carry most of the survival gear in a large reinforced duffel, about 30 lbs. And all the emergency/repair equipment in two easy to carry .50 Cal Ammo cans so it can be switched between vehicles. Then annother smaller duffel carries recovery chains, and a climbing rope, annother 40 lbs. I was thinking of moving it all into an 24 gal. Action Packer like my camping gear but it would be a two man lift. http://www.rubbermaid.com/UnbelievableProducts/UnbelievableProducts/products/F_1172-04-38_11779_7.jpg I'd recomend the Action Packer. Its stackable, lockable, waterproof, has attachments for bungies and is strong enough to stand on. I bought some rubber automotive weahter stripping and put it in the seam so my camping one is nearly air tight now. ChuckH 12-31-2001, 03:42 AM I like the Action Packers...they work great! I hope you guys aren't carrying all that crap everyday! For everyday use and basic tools and such I have a tall and narrow yellow toolbox that fits under the pull cover and up against the back of the seat. It's held in place with a bumgee cord attached tot he seat latch and my subwoofer bracket on the other side. It has two trays that sit up on top of the bottom bin and was only about $10. Not a bad deal! I keep my shovel, safety triangle, and jumper cables between the seat backs and the subwoofer/toolbox and my air pump and blanket sit between the toolbox and subwoofer. My tow strap (not shown) just sits on the floor back there with my camping chair. When wheeling I pack up the action packers with camping gear and any spare parts and such that I may have. evergreen 12-31-2001, 05:54 PM thanks for all the ideas. think i will use a combo of duffle bag and action packer. thanks Kerensky97 01-01-2002, 08:00 PM Originally posted by ChuckH I hope you guys aren't carrying all that crap everyday Um...Yeah. http://www.stopstart.fsnet.co.uk/smilie/noid.gif I never use the cargo area for anything else (not married, single). I carry my offroad gear all the time because I don't plan my outings. I'm just driving down the road and see a dirt trail go up into the hills, three hours later I come out on the other side of the mountains. Call of the Trail I guess.;) Stormy 01-07-2002, 10:23 AM How's this one? Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
