Question 1.9L Head

does anyone know if there is a problem with the 1.9L head on the Escort.
Such as the valve seat breaking.

Re: 1.9L Head

yes they do , and they beat the crap out of the top of the piston. From what I understand if the head gets hot it will flex and crack the pressed in hard valve seat. .....been there done that.

thanks for the reply there and doing that! My daughters car did exactly what you described. Went to the wreking yard for another head and there were 6 engines without the head. Imagine that! Sounds like a Ford boo boo.

Re: 1.9L Head

Be careful with this problem! I have a '94 Escort that had the same problem. This is a well known problem with these 1.9 engines.
If the valve seats dropped you need to do more than replace the head. Those small bits of metal will be all over in your engine. Take the time to inspect and thoroughly clean the block (I recommend getting in to a shop). Also, be sure to give the intake manifold a good cleaning as there are likely pieces of metal inside there too. If you do not, as soon as you start the car up it will suck them right down into the cylinder. My own situation was unfortunate enough that I had to replace the whole engine because of the internal damage. Hopefully you discovered your problem quickly enough that it is not as severe... just take the time to clean out the ENTIRE engine otherwise your time, money and effor tin replacing the head will be for nothing.
