Ford Expedition caught fire
Last night my 2002 Ford Expedition caught fire after just driving it 26 miles from home. The adjuster stated it was an electrical fire and my vechile just immediately blew up in flames. Luckly I was able to make it safely out of the passenger side door, because the drivers side was already ingulfed in flames. The vehicle is a total loss, because everything was burnt and there is nothing left. Would also like to find out what Ford is going to do about this, because a vehicle should not just have a spontaneous combustion for no reason.

Re: 2000 expedition catches fire
Remember, Ford had problems with Aerostar vans and Crown Victorias catching fire, when unattended a few years ago. The problem turned out to be defective ignition switches (on the steering column) that would short out and burst into flames. True to form, Ford is STILL using the SAME switches in their Expeditions, Excursions, and trucks.

Ford came back and stated that basically they were sorry for our loss, but there is nothing they can do. They have no appeals department or anything on the decisions they make. Not very good customer service if you ask me. I also just bought a new Dodge and I am extremely happy with it. Thanks everyone!

Re: 2000 expedition catches fire
On July 23, 2004, our 2000 Ford Expedition caught fire in our garage burning our home down. We had taken it in for the wiper blade recall, but had recently had our rear wiper and cruise control to go out. We were in our garage 1 hour before the fire with nothing happening at that time. My son woke up to flames outside his window (he was asleep in the room above the garage) and smoke coming through the floor. We ran out with the smoke alarms going off as we ran out. Our son's room fell into the fire 10 minutes after we got out of the house. The insurance adjuster says there is not enough of the Expedition left to show proof it started the fire, however the hood was actually melted and the evidence showed the fire started in the area of the Expedition.
The State Fire Marshall Investigator said he had no doubt that the Ford started the fire, as well as all Fire Chiefs and Fire Fighters that were called to the scene (5 units in all). Evidently the insurance company can pay the claim for less than fighting Ford even though our losses were tremendous, we had a 6000 square foot home with a lot of loss including another vehicle in the garage. Our son nearly lost his life, what's it going to take for Ford to take responsibility for this - actual loss of life? We will spend the next year of our life rebuilding and replacing 27 years accumulation of our things. However we can't replace our memories and cherished mementos. We'll never own another Ford and are warning everyone about them. By the way, 2 weeks ago a 1999 Expedition burned in the garage of another home in Pleasant View, Mo. Let's go after them!

2000 Ford Expedition had the same exact problems rear wiper stopped working and cruise control did not work. Parked the car in the garage and 5 minutes later the truck was on fire. Totaled the truck and Infiniti G35 coupe next to it. Special investigator looked at the truck and determined that the fire originated from the cruise control deactivation device. This just happened the other day so we are waiting for official results. Once I have will post.

Re: 2000 expedition catches fire
Please let us know when you find out what the problem was. Ours was so destroyed they can't tell what caused it to burn. Thanks, Curt

Re: 2000 expedition catches fire
Hi. Our 2000 Expedition caught fire about a week ago, 10 minutes after we returned home. Our truck was totalled and the adjuster as well as the fire department think that it was an electrical defect from the factory. We never had any problems with the truck. My husband emailed the board of directors at Ford and told them what happened and we never received a response. Is anyone thinking of a possible class action law suit???

Hi, I just posted under "akschex" our expedition caught fire a week ago today. Adjuster and Fire Department both said that it was an electrical defect from factory. My husband emailed the board of directors at Ford and never received a reply. Are you thinking of a possible class action lawsuit? If so, we would definetly be interested.

I also have the report from the Fire Department and also many pictures. Most of the damage was on the Driver's side. I can email them to you if you would like. Please let me know.
my email is akschex@cox.net
Thanks.
We did not know that a forum like this one existed, got the information from a neighbor down the street.

I just had my 2000 Expedition catch fire on Saturday. Fire started in the engine compartment on the driver's side. Fortunately, my wife and I were outside doing yard work and noticed burning pieces of plastic falling to the driveway. By the time the fire department got here the entire front end was in flames and melted part of the vinyl siding over my garage. Claims adjuster is coming this morning but the fire marshall said that they would have to list cause of fire as undetermined.

Still in the process of trying to find a lawyer that will take a look at all this. I am still trying to get an appointment with the Colorado State Attorney General. If anyone can help please let me know. Thank GOD no one has been hurt or KILLED.
