Crutchfield/Best Buy disagree

I have a 1994 Toyota Camry (4-door Sedan) and know that I need 6 1/2" speakers for the front of my car. Crutchfield claims that only a select few 6 1/2" speakers will work, otherwise the factory grill will not work and I will have to cut. Best buy, on the other hand claims that any 6 1/2" speakers will fit fine - has anyone installed speakers to know? I don't want to be limited to a smaller selection, but I want to make sure the speakers I buy will fit. Thanks for any help.

Re: Crutchfield/Best Buy disagree

It is possible the width of the speakers is different. Most 6-1/2" speakers are 16 cm. However, there is a small group that are actually 6-3/4" or 17 cm (I think the speaker size is the same, but the mounting brackets are larger). My understanding is that Toyota's require the 6-3/4" speakers which usually cost a premium and come in limited selection. I have found Sony, Kenwood, and Pioneer speakers that come in the 6-3/4" size, but they start at $80 on sale for 2-way speakers. There is supposed to be an adapter bracket that you can use to mount the 6-1/2" speakers in Toyota's. I have seen some on ebay for $5 and Wal-Mart had some for $13. I am in the process of changing out the speakers in my car if I ever get around to it. I hadn't heard anything about the depths being different and causing problems, but that could be true.

I recently upgraded the speakers in my 95 camry. I purchased the speakers from Crutchfield. The front speakers came with adapters and yes, I needed them. I have dealt with Crutchfield several times in the past and have always been impressed with their product knowledge. They've never let me down.

I also upgraded my speakers on my '00 Camry with speakers purchased from Crutchfield. 6 3/4" Rockford Fosgates for the front. Came with wiring harness, no adapters and excellent fit.

I'd go with the Crutchfiled reccomendation
