Newby in Town--Mods
Hi all--
I'm new to this forum and wanted to say hello. I am sure I will be getting some vital info from my fello Nissan enthusiest. I just picked up an 04 Spec V this past July and everyone is right, the nose is pretty blah, but it grows on you. I am going to be putting some mods in. If, anyone has some suggestions I'm more than willing to listen. I am thinking of going with a nismo intake and exhaust....
Has anyone raced a Mercedes C230 Kompressor? My buddy swares up and down he'll beat me with my stock. I am thinking not.
Thanks EVIL

Well first, I would go for the Hotshot headers if I were you. Those headers are supposed to make 12 whp. The Hotshot CAI is also good and fairly inexpensive. Exhaust doesn't really matter but if you want optimum performance out of your Spec, get a Tanabe Racing exhaust.
They also make a pretty good selection of bodykits and interior gadgets for your spec. There's no doubt the Spec V is starting to get good aftermarket support.

Re: Newby in Town--Mods
An intake and header are normally a good place to start, without an exhaust it will tend to sound a little raspy though. I would also steer away from the Hotshot cai, they have a tendency to rust inside, but their header is top notch. For a cai, look at AEM and Injen, Nismo would also work but it's not worth the extra money if it costs any more than the others. There are no body kits out for the 04 yet, and I doubt many will be made considering it's only a 2 year run, where the rest of the b15s are a 4 year run. There's more profit ability for the companies if they make something for the rest of us since there are atleast twice as many of us out there. Sucks for the 04 guys, but that's the way it works I'm afraid.

Actually, they do make a front spoiler for the 04 SE-R. Look on the Stillen website. They have various body kits out for the 2002-2003. I've never heard of rusting with the Hotshot CAI but AEM or Injen would probably be a better choice cost aside.

Re: Newby in Town--Mods
sorry, so there's a lip out
I know a couple companies are working on getting a kit out, but as of now there's nothing (other than the lip).

Thanks all. Would anyone know where to find some good install instructions for the Hotshot header? or any at all?

sounds like you're interested in the header, so you must not care about warranty issues. so, why don't you look into removing the balance shafts (it's a FREE 12 or so horsepower).
shortshifters are cheap and fun.
nismo i/h/e combo is pretty badass.
fuel management from apexi would be worthwhile too.
and don't forget about all of the suspension mods available.

I didn't know the header replacement would cause issues with the warranty. duh. Removing the balance shafts won't do the same? Any insight on how to do that? I will be taking all this to my mechanic, but I would like to get an idea and learn to do these things on my own. Any other simple mods for extra power (that won't void the warranty?).

pretty much everything you do to the car performance wise will void the warrenty. the only way around it is with the simple stuff like a cai where you cna take it off and put the stock airbox back on befor eyou go to have it serviced. but who needs a warrenty anyway?

Re: Newby in Town--Mods
Anything you replace on the car will void the warranty in some way. The catch is, your modification has to cause the problem in order for it to not be warrantied. Basically, if you get an intake and blow your MAF it's not covered, but if you get an exhaust and your electric door locks stop working, it will still be covered. The BS mod will completely void your entire engine warranty, and should only be done if you don't care about the warranty or it's already expired. An intake you can take back off if something goes wrong, but it's not very ethical and many times they can catch it. An exhaust really can't do anything to the car, so that's a pretty safe bet, the problem is it doesn't really give you any hp either. A header is debateable, chances are it won't cause any problems, but if your cat goes out they could technically blame it on the header.

Yeah, and about that C230, the SE-R is slightly faster, so it would pretty much be a driver's race. I'd bet on the spec-V though. If I remember correctly, the Spec-V's run a 15.4 stock. That's a pretty good match-up for the C230's 15.7 1/4 mile.

Thanks for the input, sr20de4evr. I will probably only go with the intake. I seem to run into bad luck and wouldn't want to put on mounds of cash for something that could POSSIBLY be blamed on a mod.
Thanks for the times, fugiot. After I put the CAI in I'm going to go through with the race. He wants to wager and good amount of $$ and I know I'm the better driver.

Ahem, the C230 puts out near 200 horsepower and torque out of a 2.3 liter supercharged engine. Now tell me, the weight issues aside, do you think an N/A 2.5 with VVL can out do a supercharged engine with constant power delivery. I think not. But, it does depend highly on the driver.
