first thing...intake and exhaust.:) you have many choices for air intakes, get a good K&N cold air intake or any other good quality intake. exhaust... hard to pick the best. you have alot of choices with that also. i would go with JDM stuff. then you will wanna get suspension. do some searches on nissanforums.com. you have alot of aftermarket support for your car out there. in nissan forums, you will find alot of info. laterz

after you get the basics and before you go into deeper stuff, you will have to decide if you want n/a or turbo. so start thinkin bout it right now, and also if you want to auto-x,drag or whatever. make up your mind, and maybe we can give you better advice. laterz

This decision should be made before he starts anything, because if he decides to turbo then everything he just did is a waste. Forget about nissanforums as well, there are a couple knowledgable people there, but there is MUCH more info at www.sr20forum.com

If you do want to go turbo then don't mod your engine at all, it'll just be a waste. If you decide to go NA then start with an intake and header. Exhaust is really a waste, it's just for the sound and doesn't affect your hp much at all. Look to JWT for the serious stuff, you can get a set of s3 or s4 (or even c1 if you're hardcore enough, hehe) cams, and a reprogrammed ecu to match. Next should be a clutch since your stock one is probably pretty worn, while you're in there you might as well get an upgraded flywheel (makes the install much easier if you do them at the same time). The engine can take a helluva lot of power, so after you get the normal boltons, cams, etc you can add a decent sized wetshot or direct port n2o setup. Just do some research over on sr20forum and you'll get all the info you could ever want and more.

Listen to him.
Only thing I gotta say is with N/A, street driving is much more civil.

The bluebird would be the best way to go. Parts are available from your local nissan dealer. Parts for the GTI-R will have to be tracked down in Japan which is a pain in the ass. With the bluebird motor, exhaust, and good driving, he should be mid to low 13s.

The bluebird is nice, but for a little more you can get a gti-r det that makes ~25hp more and has a bit beefier internals. All sr20 parts are swappable just about, so if he wanted anything from the factory he could get it just as easily for either motor. Actually I doubt you'd find anything for a BB or GTI-R det at a local dealer, considering neither of them were ever sold in the US. The best you could do is get a part from a USDM sr20 and then put it in your det, which can be done for both models so it's a moot point.

By the way, an upgraded(lightened) flywheel will give you a major whp boost. When I got my SE-R, I had just installed an HKS intake and it was running approximately 15.6 in the 1/4. Then I installed a 6-puck ACT clutch and an 8.5lb Unorthodox flywheel and it dropped my 1/4 time down to 14.7! These cars are beasts with very few mods, you just have to choose the right ones. I took down a slightly modded ITR and the guy thought I was lying to him for like 10 min. when I said it's a stock motor. Also look into disconnecting your EGR valve. I'm sure your dad knows about that. Other notable kills you can expect:

Infiniti G35(sedan)
Altima 3.5 SE
RSX-S
Hemi Durango
Mazda RX-8(5mph rolling start).
All Preludes and Integras that aren't modded too much.

The SR20's near-perfect power curve is just plain awesome. And the SR20VE's PERFECT power curve is so enticing that I can't help but direct all my money towards one.

The AZsolo2 road racing organization here in AZ has a guy with a STOCK (except for sticky tires) 91 SE-R in its Stock class, that beats most of the cars on the track, regardless of class. My friend with a turbo RX-7 has never beat him, and he said that he has seen this car whup-up on cars that are supposedly out of its league, like Corvettes and caged racers.

They hate the guy. Makes everybody look bad.

But then again, the dude has been road-racing for 30+ years.

BTW, here's one of my favorite links:
http://www.speedventures.net/event_results_db.asp?event=9/20/2002-Buttonwillow&results=OA&s=lt

Pay attention to car #12, that car's HP, and the cars that are BELOW it in the standings...
