89 suburban stalls at 40-50mphcalifornia-kiwi 01-25-2004, 11:13 PM Hi there, My wife usually drives the 89, recently it started stalling at highway speed, sometimes slower around the neighborhood. It left a code 42 so I went through all the test steps in my GM manual and nothing I did seemed to fix it. When it dies, it is immediate, as you pull over you can hear the motor dieseling for 10 seconds or so until it stops. Then you can smell like a plastic burning smell for a little while, Then it starts and runs ok again. I have changed tons of parts , plugs , leads, cap, rotor, Ignition module, ECM, thermostat, temp sensor. Im ready to find a cliff for it to fall off. I did observe one unusual thing, just after it stalled, the temp gauge went up pretty quickly from its normal spot to 210 or so. Back down again on restart. Im losing it on this one guys so if you can help please do. Thanks, pete. Bossman 01-26-2004, 03:30 AM You need to go from this Toyota Camry forum to a GM forum. I'm sure they'll be better able to help you there. Best of luck. Joe W 01-26-2004, 08:12 PM Code 42 seems to point to the ignition module/wiring. california-kiwi 01-26-2004, 09:27 PM You need to go from this Toyota Camry forum to a GM forum. Hi Joe, Yeah, Ive gone through the wiring tests on all of the ignition wiring between the ingition module and the ECM and it all tests properly for resistance and the ignition module can be switched from the ECM. A bit of a mystery this one. Pete. yotatechie04 01-27-2004, 11:28 PM Someone might want to move this post over to the GM forums sometime soon...before it drives us Toyota fanatics nuts. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
