1998 Lumina

i am replacing the intake gasket in my car and took out the valve lifters to clean them real good and by accident i mixed them up.i know they look the same but are you suppose to put them back in the exact same spot.what do i need to do now?what will it hurt by putting them in different spots.thanks in advance for youe response

If you reuse the old lifters you should put them back in the same lifter bore you took them out of. The reason is beause they wear-in with the valve/pushrod/rocker and lifter bore. So it can affect how the engine runs. You can put it back together how you have them and see if they wear into the bore you put them in. But with all the time and money it cost to replace the intake gaskets! I would buy new ones (set) and put them in. Aslo you will want to make sure you don't mix up the push rods. The exhaust push rods are longer than the intake (mix them up and you could get a bent one) you should also check the pushrods on a flat smooth surface (like a piece of glass) to see if they are bent. If so replace replace the bent rod. it sounds like more work, but in the long run it will save you time and lots of money.
