How To Change Plugs? 1996 Passat GLX VR6

I'm confused on how to change the spark plugs on this vehicle. It looks like they are very deep in there and on a angle. I've looked several times, but to no avail do i know how to get to them.

HELP PLEASE

Re: How To Change Plugs? 1996 Passat GLX VR6

I own a '95 VR6 and have changed the plugs often. It's easy. First on the hood prop rod there is (or should be) a plastic piece or handle. It looks like a screw driver handle. Pull it away from the rod. Use this to remove the plug wires. The "boot" that attaches to the plug has flanges that the slots on the "puller" grip to. Pull all the plug wires and be sure not to cross them or confuse where they must return to. Now get an extension bar for your rachet handle that will reach the bottom of the plug hole (10 inches should do). Using a 5/8 plug socket remove the plugs. Keep track of which cylinder each plug came from. This way you can check them for unusual wear and condition and know which cylinder could be a problem. Insert the new plugs and tighten them as described on the packaging. Usually about a quarter to half turn after the washer makes contact ( I have also heard this is about 25 ft/lbs on a torque wrench) check with VW or a mechanic to be sure if you are not. DONT OVER TIGHTEN. If you have some dialectic grease use it in the plug boots to ensure good contact. One thing to watch is the angle of the plugs. DONT EVER FORCE A PLUG IF IT DOESNT WANT TO GO IN EASILY. Sorry for the long reply good luck. Email At hoss.mcdermott@sympatico.ca if you have more questions or need more info.

Re: How To Change Plugs? 1996 Passat GLX VR6

got it done, but the damn plug tool broke on the 3rd plug.good thing i was able to get to it and the other 2 on the back side with a pair of needle nose pliers. the three plug wires on the front of the motor need that tool, but did those first. vw dealer wants $20 for a new one,and didn't have it in stock, so i ordered one for the future which will be in tuesday.change the plugs, filter, and the oil, plus rear wiper, washer fluid, topped off allfluids. now stella blue is runnung pretty smooth.we'll see how the gas mileage is in the next few days. it was a $100 day for her. you know plugs cost $3.99 a piece?my 69 bus plugs are barely $2.00

Re: How To Change Plugs? 1996 Passat GLX VR6

I run Bosch platinum 4 plugs in my 95 VR6. Here in Canada it comes to $60 just for six. Thats about 50 or so US. Great plugs though. I would rocommend them to anyone. I hear and read that many Porsche owners and mechanics run them as well. That says a lot. Sorry about your luck with the tool, but good to hear I could help. Mike.
