just sold my jeep cherokee and am in the market to buy a used gti in the spring.as this is going to be my first manual transmission car, i was hoping someone could help me answer some questions:

1. which is better? the vr6 or the 1.8 turbo? I am eventually planning to autocross it (maybe not for a while) i want to know the upsides and downsides to both.

2. Is there an advantage to buying a gti from the 2000+ series as opposed to one from 99? What is different about the models?

1. You'll never be able to find out the answer to this question till you drive both, and drive them both hard. If you want to know the "up-sides and downsides of both" then look at some of the other posts.

2. If you get a 1.8t, make sure to get a 2002+, because they came with 180hp stock from that year up.
