If the Idle is going up and down, the first thing you want to look at is the IAC.
The Idle Air Control Motor or Valve is on the backside of the throttle body, it adjust the air going into the engine to control the idle.
The problem is this part gets filled with junk from the engine and causes it to malfunction. It's a easy part to change and only costs $30 someodd dollars from AutoZone. You could also try cleaning it.
It is held on to the throttle body by 2 screws (don't know if they were bolts or screws) and a connector at the end.
