no start and ticking

My 91 2.2 cav won't start. been having trouble starting recently, burnt out the starter and replaced it. It still has a loud "TICK TICK TICK" when turning over, but won't start. I've ruled out starter, the noise is coming from the engine area. what is this?????? I have other issues with this car too but getting it started is my first concern as I need to get to work, and I've already missed today.

Could be a passkey (theft deterent system) problem. Do you have a spare key to try?

Re: no start and ticking

battery is fine, belts turn. Got it running yesterday, but today no go. today it won't even turn just the ticking. It has a new starter.
I'm thinking something with the ignition???? The ticking is from under the hood, near the front???? I'm lost.
It runs a little ruff, but ok, after it gets started. When it starts.

Do you have a security light? Is it on?

Re: no start and ticking

Every time Ive heard a ticking noise, its because the battery is near death and the solonoid is making the clicking noise. Bring your battery somewhere to have it tested.

Re: no start and ticking

You may have a bad ground to the battery. Or to the starter. If you can find these grounds (do you have a book?) try testing them with a testlight. If you don't have a book, I have a haynes manual that covers that year, I can check it for you and tell you where they are.

Re: Re: no start and ticking

Is it a low sounding tick ? Might be a starter relay. Try to listen for it while someone tries to crank it.

if you are having trouble starting and hear ticking from the front of the engine and you say it ran rough when you got it started, try checking the timing belt or chain depending on the engine it could have jumped.

Re: no start and ticking

You got a bad connection to the starter solenoid.

Check the wiring to the "S" terminal.

Re: no start and ticking

have the battery tested if it is good then replace the power wire to the starter and the ground wire to the engine.
