I have a 1995 Lumina, and I had the exact same problem. After replacing my transmission, I tore apart my old one, and it turns out the only thing wrong with it is called the reverse reaction drum. There are geared teeth on both sides, and on one side, all of the teeth were stripped, and the teeth were rolling around in the tranny, this is why you might of heard a knocking sound when your engine is in park.
