Cold....won't start

I have a 1996 Contour SE. Here in Massachusetts, we woke up to below zero temperatures. My car would not start, it wouldn't even turn over. I had plenty of gas in it and it is not the battery. Does anyone know what may have happened? When we tried with the battery it emitted a slight electrical smell. The car ran perfectly fine last night. Could it just be the cold?

extreme cold temps can cause a battery to go bad. Id check the battery again.
