Timing belt replacement

Has anyone out there relaced the timing belt by themselves on a 92 tercel? I bought one used with 145K and figure even if it was replaced(like he said it was) I better go ahead and do it. I have never replaced a timing belt but have rebuilt a few engines and want to know if it takes a rocket scientist to do this. Thanks.

No, its not to difficult the hardest part is actually setting the timing. You need to loosen the alternator, and remove the accessory belt, then remove timing cover. The crank pulley might take some work to get off you might need a breaker bar. then remove timing belt tensioner. Then all you have to do is set timing and put it back together, cant remeber exact procedure for setting timing. I will try and post again with procedure.

P.S. I did this on my 81 tercel hope its not to much different on a 92.

Thanks for the reply. I was beginning to wonder if any has had to do this. My 92 is just a commuter car with no extras on it. Just A/C. If you can think of any more info please post it.

timing belt replacement

Just fyi alldata uses a 1995 tercel as a sample to get you to subscribe -- this would be similar for the basics of removal. AND don't pry grears off, use a gear puller there are cheap compared to damage that can be done.

If the 92 engine is anything like the 90, be very careful with the crank pulley. Took me forever to get it off and I wound up cracking the pully around the edges.

After the crankshaft pully, the timing belt is easy. You may have to drop the engine on the passenger side to get the CS pulley off tho.
