Random starting problem

I have a 1993 S-10 Blazer with e V-6 Vortec engine. It has starting problems. Turn the key and dash lights come on, nothing else, no clicking from solenoid. Left the ignition on and took a screw driver to the solenoid and got the starter going. Let it run, turned it off and restarted ok. Let it set for a few minutes and we start all over again.
Can't be the battery right?
Can't be the starter right? I can jump it and it works.
Is it the alternator, voltage regulator maybe?

Re: Random starting problem

your right, not the starter, not the battery, not the altenator (or V.R.), and not even the solenoid.... what you did by jumping the solenoid was basically by-pass the ignition key (switch) so therefore i would be thinking maybe it's an ignition issue right in your steering column. When you hit the key it activates (or pushes) a rod that goes down your steering column and hits a switch lower down, it's probly that switch acting up. Hope that helped.

Tried again tonight, it started twice then the solenoid clicked several times then nothing. Turned the ignition on, went out and jumped the starter and it started up again. Turned it off and tried again inside, wouldn't start. Went out and jumped the starter and it started.
Is that the solenoid?
If it is an ignition problem would that happen intermittenly?
Thanks for the reply.

I think you might have figured out your own issue.

Since you talked about warm and cold effecting it, maybe you have a ground loose?

Re: Random starting problem

i'm starting to wonder about dirty terminals...either one the battery itself or on the solinoid. Sometimes a sticky soliniod can cause problems. Keep me posted. (no pun intended)

Re: Random starting problem

Turned out to be the starter- or solenoid- I guess, that was a quick fix, wish they all could be so easy.
