Unhappy s 10 blazer starter won't disengage

Ijust installed a starter in my 1984 chevy s 10 blazer. When I turn the key the starter engages to start the vehicle but won't disengage, even when I turn the key off.The only way I can get it to stop is to disconect the battery terminal on the battery. Its safe to say that I done something wrong.but i cant figure it out I tried adding shims and taking them out compleatly maybe the wiring???I have two wires to the nut with the s on it and the smaller wire lug to the smaller nut.help please thanks mike
