stock for stock, the vr6 has more hp and tq, but it is easier to mod a turbo...
with just a chip you can get about 200hp, whereas if you chip a vr6, you can end up with maybe 10-15 on top of the stock 175ish hp...
so with only a chip, it becomes a VERY close race...

if you perform the same mods on both cars, i think that the turbo, being an easy modded motor, should win if you perform identical mods

I think the VR6 is faster stock, however the NEW GTI has a 204 Hp VR6.

exactly...
but mod for mod, the turbo should get more from each successive mod, and that would put it on a winning edge...
and, the vr6 w/ 204 has been tuned more, meaning that some of the aftermarket ideas that would be applied would not be as fruitful... know what i mean?
that is like buyin a 1.8t motor, and upgrading to the ecu from the audi tt with 180...
so part of the work is alread done for you... know what i mean?

Well just based on what you have, you have a six and a four banger. Now with the turbo, yes, with mods you can get more. Same thing with the VR6. But you got more coming from the 6 than the turbo. While the 6, you would really only need is a CAI, chip and exhaust. The turbo would run you more and need more to compete. My best friend has one and I'm about to buy a new VR6. Just my 2 cents.

I have to disagree. I think the 1.8T would be better for modifying because it has an existing turbo...thus, tweak that a little (i.e. up boost, chip, cams) and your mods will totally defeat a VR6...because the Turbo's mods would (in general) give more of a benefit.

GTI, excellent car, but VR6 is out of the league of a 1.8t. Yes, modifying you can get them equal, and any modification on the 1.8t will be more notable, mostly because the 1.8t as stock, is dam slow. 3rd speed is sooooo loooonnng it put the car to sleep.
I wanted one, until I drove my friend's 2000 GTI 1.8t 4 doors.

But yes, it's better to mod (the 1.8t).

How much would it cost to get the 1.8t to around 250hp?

250 hp is not hard...
a chip and exh can get 210...
intake and cams, figure another ten ish...
maybe upgrade the turbo, or put in a straight pipe for the last 30 or so...

it would take more to get 250hp out of the vr6 than the 1.8t if that is what you asking

for the money...
you would be spending around 1k for the chip and exh... getting 50-60hp...
if you spend that 1k on the vr6 chip and exh, you get maybe 20ish...
cams are similar power for price...
more power from straight pipe on a turbo...

Whoever said the new VR6 is tuned more, so aftermarket mods will not do as much is totally wrong! Instead of 2 valves per cylinder, they've gone to 4. All this does is increases the gas/air/exhaust flow to and from the engine. They didn't take the current VR6 and tweak it or anything like that. It won't even be the VR anymore, it'll just be a V6. And as for tunability? Someone's already milked 500 something horsepower out of the "new" V6s. Which will only be new to us over here in the united states.

1.8T versus VR6, this debate is on EVERY VW forum. It depends on what you want. Dollar for dollar, you can get a lot of gains out of the 1.8T, and it would indeed cost more to get the same gains out of the VR6. But there are a few of us who wish to turbocharger their VR6, which just flips the tables upside down. If you go out and buy a turbo, the arguements over, a turbocharged VR6 will devour the 1.8T.

no doubt a turbo vr6 will kill...
i would do that right off the bat...
but all i said is that if evenly priced... 1.8 kills, only b/c it is one step ahead with a turbo...
i would rather have a vr6 if i was keeping the car, but if i wasnt doin serious stuff with it, the 1.8 is the way to go, b/c the mods are cheap and highly beneficial...
buy a vr, lease the turbo
