I was driving along the highway this evening and I decided to go all out. I have a 2000 Civic SI. I was in 5th gear doing about 185km/h and revving at about 5000 rpm. All of a sudden it sounded and felt as if the car just died. Is there a limiter on the engine that prevents it from doing a certain speed??? Also, will my vtec kick in when I am in 5th gear and doing more then 5500 rpm???

you probably hit the rev or speed limiter. cause I hit the rev llimiter in parents accord (missed a gear) and the car felt like it had nothing left until the computer let it go again. but yeah you probably jus thit the rev or speed limiter. hope that helps:p

He hit the speed limiter, not the rev limiter since he was only in the 5000's

Is there any way of preventing this or making the cutoff greater than what it is???

yeah theres a chip you can get that will eliminate the speed limiter, or better yet get a honda data ecu :)

yeah the only way to take your speed limiter off would be the chip or getting a performance ecu like Hondata or AEM.

How much do these roughly go for???

With all the cop blitzes in and around Toronto these days, you might want to consider spending your money on other performance related items, no? At 185km/h you are already in deep do-do if you get caught...

That said, I used to have an Si and I used to run into the speed limiter on occasion, and now I have an SiR and the sky is the limit, and I have to admit, it is pretty nice.

But, damn, can you imagine the size of the fine, the points, and the INSURANCE if you get caught at those speeds? I shudder to think about it...

:D

That's coming back from Edmonton. I've gone a bit past 200km/h before, but since the CRX is so tiny, it felt unstable.

I got caught going 148km/h in a 70 zone. That's no 185, but that's still a lot. My license almost got taken away, and I got put on probation for 6 months. Actually I'm still on probation, but I'm off in a couple weeks!

Damn, that's worse than my 160 in a 110 zone up by Wetaskawin. Still waiting for a mail for my court date. $232!!!!!

14st is a crazy road. I try to avoid it cuz I know I'll end up speeding hardcore.:D

hey good call. I WAS on 14th street. It was right when I was passing Heritage Park at 1am. There were pigs sitting in that intersection with a radar gun. The only good thing that came out of that was I still managed to beat the guy I was racing!
Yeah, I did find a car, I found a '90 Z. Its only got about 50k km on it, but its in Edmonton, and I'm having a hard time finding a ride up there to take a look at it. Hopefully I can get it done by this weekend.

A '90 Z with only 50k!! That is a sweet deal yo! If you can afford it go for it man! Z's are fast from stock, then you mod em and they're crazy! I always catch myself speeding or wanting to speed on 14th! I raced a Stealth there and kept even with him too (stock Integra here) but I don't think he was really pushing it too hard. But hey it was fun enough!:D

If you can get upto Edmonton take a pic or two and post them! Let's see what your hopefully soon to be car looks like!

Yeah, it took me so long to find it, because I was looking for the 2+2 model, in 5 speed. I heard they didn't make those in Canada (they only came in auto), or if they did they're really rare. The guy already sent me some pictures, but he won't e-mail me back. So I'll probably just call him or something.
I don't know how I feel about the front fascia though, and I don't know if I like that color too much. I'll take a look at it first though in person and see how it looks.
If I do end up getting it, I'll probably end up replacing the front end with the Stillen one that's made of urethane. I've been doing some research on the Z, and I'm kind of disappointed because of the lack of aftermarket support for the car. There isn't nearly as much aftermarket exposure for the Z than there are for any Honda out there.
Anyways, here's the pics

Not 100% sure, but I think most if not all EFI vehicles have rev limiters. Speed limiters is another story...

Rev limiters prevent the engine from overrev on accelleration (as in, floor the throttle, don't shift, bounce off the rev limiter), to prevent engine damage. It won't prevent damage on a bad downshift (say, fifth to second at 120km/h - OUCH!). Rev limiters are often fuel cutoffs, which to me is kinda scary because the motor will go lean at high rpms, but I'm sure the manufacturers know what they are doing...

Speed limiters pervent the vehicle from going over a predetermined top speed. This is a safety issue. The manufacturer of the vehicle might not think the tires on the vehicle, or even the vehicle itself, is safe beyond that speed, or that a certain speed is just plain enough.

What kind of truck is it? Rev limiters would be pretty easy to program into any EFI system, so I would think most if not all modern vehicles have them.

I have had 7 speeding tickets in my 6 yrs of driving. My insurance is now almost 4000$/yr for full coverage. Not to mention I almost lost my lisence several times.

DO NOT SPEED. IT ISN'T WORTH IT. They actually affect your insurance more than accidents.

$4000/yr isn't even that bad. When I had a clean record my insurance was $4200 per year full coverage. And since I got that huge ticket my insurance is now $6700 per year for full coverage.

thanks. I'm going up there probably sunday to take a look at it. Then hopefully I'll have it purchased (if I like it) by the weekend after that.

you better act fast man, that car is in good shape and has extremely low kilometers, two characteristics that make that car very marketable, not to mention its a Z, which is a very sweet car, those cars don't last long on the dealers lot, good luck

I think its mine now. I'm calling the guy back today and we're going to settle on a price. I talked him down to 19 grand from 21. I'm going to try to talk him down to 18, but I'll still buy for 19. So I'm pretty sure that its pretty much mine.

Actually, the speed limiter is a kind of rev limiter. It's connected to the tranny and it's set on the 5th gear. I mean that if ur engine is modified but not the cpu, u can go through 185 km/h in 4th gear but not in 5th.

Hope it helps.

Peace y'all, Raph...
