Question hesitation from first gear to second

My '99 Camaro will periodically hesitate when shifting from first to second. Does'nt do it often, only about once or twice every couple of months. Have asked friends and other owners but got no results. Car is a 3.8, auto with about 106,000 miles. any feedback would be appreciated!

WOW....106K on a stock, original 4L60E transmission!!! If it hesitates going into gear on the 1-2 shift, then your clutch packs are wearing out. That means time for a rebuild. Prepare to spend at least $1,000 for a tranny rebuild.

If it doesnt do it to often then I would wait till it is on its last leg, then have it rebuilt.

Shop around for the best price, and get on the other F-body message boards like LS1tech.com and ask about a reputable tranny shop in your area. Dont take to the first place you come across. It takes a special touch to rebuild a 4L60E tranny and get it to last more than 35K miles.

um, not nessesaraly the clutch packs is it?? what about the 1st-2nd servo??? if that were leaking and loosing pressure, that could be the problem as well.

im not too sure on trannys but if you pay over 1000 for a rebuild your gettin ripped off. you might as well just buy a brand new tranny.

If you were driving an 8 I would tell you to look at some rebuilt 700R4's - you can pick them up for as little as $400 on eBay and they're dyno'd to over 500 HP. You could by all means use a 700 with your 6 but I'm sure you would miss the driveability of your electronic 4L60E. Mine is old and stupid now and will either get an $1800 HD rebuild or be replaced by a beefed up 700R4.

Dont go with a rebuilt 700R4, they are like a 305 because once you rebuild it, its just like throwing money away. If you buy anything, id buy another new 4L60E. They will run you a little over $1000 but you know what your getting over something thats on ebay that could be a junk 700R4.

True about eBay - you've got to be carefull who you buy from. For the plans I've got for my Z a stock (new or used) 4L60E is not an option, and a stock 700R4 is arguably a tougher tranny than its electronic counterpart. For the money, you can get a well build and dyno'd 700R4 (not from eBay) that will easily and reliably handle over 500 HP - depends on who you buy it from right?

In a previous volume of GM High Tech they wrote about a shop in Texas I think that rebuilds 4L60E's for $1,800 plus core into a bulletproof 10 second tranny. If I had the dough I would probably spring for a really heavy duty rebuild on my tranny. But then again, they say there's nothing like "manually" shifting gears on a beefed up 700R4.

Re: hesitation from first gear to second

hey swtichfoot, whats wrong with the 700R4? i just had mine completly rebuilt, with a B&M trans kit, clutches, bands, fliters, o-rings, and a stage two shift kit. a corvette 1st - 2nd servo. including labor and parts, all it cost me was 416.00. and it will handle just about anything i want to throw at it on the street. without going crazy and putting in a top fuel dragster engine. just cuz its not the latest dont mean its crap.

Re: hesitation from first gear to second

4L60E=electronically shifted 700R4...with minor differences.

The 4L60E is not the best auto tranny by any means. stock LT1's and LS1's can burn them up. And it is had to find someone who can rebuild one and have it last more than 35K.

Century Automotive is the only place I have heard of that can build a 700R4 or a 4L60E that can stand up to any real power. Hell their famous in the F-body community for being able to do it.

where did you get this done? Think they could rebuild and fix mine (doesn't shift into Reverse on teh first, second, third or 7th try)

Re: hesitation from first gear to second

i always figured that the 4L60E was just the 4L60 shifted electronically. didnt think it was related to the 700R4 in any way...

Isn't the 4l60 the next generation of the 700R4

i think the only 700R4's you have to worry about are ones made before like 1986 or something. i know it's the early 700R4's that were junk. the only real advantage of using a 700R4 over a 4L60E is that the 700R4 doesn't require any electrical connections, more usefull if your transplanting it in place of a TH350
