expected HP ratings on a slightly tweaked 90's Turbo.Tmaxxahol 12-30-2003, 12:06 AM I am thinkin of starting a project I car I can enjoy but not dump alot of money into.. THe requirements would be under 5,000 dollar drive away costs and under 10,000 in total investment.........(car included) I really know nothing of these cars. except I like there styling and have always been attracted to the rotary engines...... I know they can be good race track performers.....I just basically want something fun to drive through the backroads.. and on a lonely sunday.. lol.... My second car in mind was a 88-91 Corrola GTS.. but I would like to give the Rotory a try.... and the corrola seems a bit harder for parts... they are there but not abound.. THanks guys for any input you may have .. I will put it to good use... Robert MBTN 12-30-2003, 12:25 AM For starters do your research. Check out the various FC boards on the net: www.rx7club.com www.fc3s.org and www.nopistons.com Soyo 01-01-2004, 03:38 PM you could find a turbo for 5 grand easy and putting another 5 into it... would be a pretty quick car, plenty of fun for the back roads :iceslolan 89Turbo944 01-05-2004, 05:06 AM Sounds like you should stay away from a rotary:) Unless you have a bunch of money to spend on a rebuild cause you arent going to spend the money to have the engine preped for modifications, then get the Carolla. Its not a cheap car to own. I have had a bunch of friends get RX7's and they sold them within the first 6 montsh because they could not affod the car. good luck tho. Jims5543 01-05-2004, 12:09 PM I am a big fan of buying a car w/ a blown engine. Getting it rebuilt and going from there. This way you know you have a fresh engine. Engine rebuild $2500 to $5000. What kind of power are you looking for? **A stand alone EMS is the best way to go, but, I had this setup and was really happy with it.** I had in my TII: S-AFC - $400 2 - 720cc secondary injectors - $200 Porfec B boost controler - $400 Full exhaust $750 Intake - $100 SR Motorsports 9.5# Flywheel ACT Clutch - $800 Buy a 89-91 TII and get turbo rebuilt/converted to a hybrid T-04E and wastegate ported. - $750 I had 242RWHP @ 9lbs of boost and ran a 13 flat 1/4 mile. Car was super dependable did tons of Autocrosses and open track days w/ it and daily drove it. Never had a problem w/ it at all. The cost of car + $6000 and you'll have a really fun car. Tmaxxahol 01-05-2004, 12:27 PM I am really a fan of rear wheel drive and not impressed with the supras handlings. so the RX was a way to get everything in one package, The Corrola would be a compromise being front wheel.... As far as my expectations.. I really just want something to eat all the damn civics and celicas that roll around here that are all asthetics and no balls........ aside from that my expectations of rear wheel horsepower.. where around 300 to 350 Im looking at a 10,000 investment.. over a few years. and For my own piece of mind I will be buying a prebuilt street ported motor.. with 3mm apex seals right of the bat....... I dont need rock solid daily driveability but I dont want it to nickle and dime me to death either.. those are my goals... I have a daily driver this will be a weekend car if that at best Thanks Robert MBTN 01-05-2004, 02:34 PM Don't forget, 3mm seal isn't always better than 2mm. Soyo 01-05-2004, 06:06 PM The Corrola would be a compromise being front wheel.... they are RWD not front... 85-87 Corolla(AE86) = AWESOME RWD BEAST well not really a beast stock, but you can find one for under 1000 dollars any day of the week. then if you put another 9k into it, then it'd be a beast. ofcourse you'd want to rebuild the engine first, then go with intake headers and exhaust to increase air flow, and it'll probably need new wheels and tires, new clutch and flywheel, and a short shifter would be nice to throw in.. then you'd still have more left over... research it, I think you'll like what you see. I am hoping to find an AE86 for like $700 bucks late this year or next year after I get my rx-7 rebuilt and just some basic bolts ons to get it into the 14's I hope. then the AE86 will be my money focus, it will be specifically for drifting and jacking around on the backroads on weekends... it will probably get a rebuild, i/h/e, shocks and springs, wheels and tires, and new clutch, flywheel, and short shifter. and as much weights reduction as possible(basically the same as what I'm wanting to do with my rx-7 but the rx-7 won't get a weight reduction) Tmaxxahol 01-06-2004, 08:33 PM I know this probly wont make sense. or maybe it will.. I dont really care for the styling of the older trueno.. AE86.. I like the 92 but it is front whelel drive.. I just dont think I can dump money into a car i dont like the beginings of the Rx7 has such a classic sprots car styling. and the handling.. I dont think im tooo far off ive been looking at necessary mods and what not and coming up around 12,000 to get 350 rhp.. . if im plus or minus a bit it wont phase me too much.. but once it is done I want it to be done till I decide I need more not the car... lol... I think its doable and I havent heard any no's as yet.. The trueono would be a cheaper way out and still have awesome handling.. but they are not sporty in look.. My exteriror will mostly remain stock.. so I want something I like of the bat.. I think the RX is what im swaying towards.. always open to suggestions.. MBTN 01-06-2004, 08:55 PM Soyo you seem to be in the same boat as me! I got a 91 NA and I need a new clutch too. :) Soyo 01-07-2004, 12:12 AM I dont really care for the styling of the older trueno.. My exteriror will mostly remain stock.. so I want something I like of the bat.. so it wont look amazing stock, but who else has one, and what ricer will expect you to blow them away in an 80's model corolla? heres a few pics I have, some with kits, some stock, some with just a front underspoiler... just for some ideas http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/67256AE86_2.jpg http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/67256AE86_5.jpg http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/67256AE86_3.jpg http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/503/67256AE86_1-med.jpg but whatever you decide, both cars are awesome Soyo 01-07-2004, 12:14 AM Soyo you seem to be in the same boat as me! I got a 91 NA and I need a new clutch too. :) I'm about to buy a new clutch disc to last me a few months then buy a whole new stage 1 clutch and 17lb steel flywheel since I don't have all the money now, unless my parents will loan me money(doubtful haha) Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
