The rubber on my shift knob is completely mangled and chewed up.

So how do you replace the handle on the shifter of an automatic transmision with a push button lock?

I can't find any screws and i can't believe it's threaded with the sidemount button

it is pushed on and is a press fit type

so if i pull hard enough it will come off?

what about the button on the side isn't that connected to something that might not want to make a vertical movement?

I am sorry I may have given you the wrong information as I was posting to the cherokee post also so that is correct information for the cherokee but maybe not the Grand cherokee. My mastake sorry. I will check and see how the knob comes off and repost again.

if its a pre-99 Grand, then you can pull it off. The button isn't attached to anything fixed. It is on there pretty tight. I use a little flat screwdriver to pry between the handle and the shaft as I pulled on it. It feels like it breaks when it finally comes off, but it's just a tight fit. Since you're going to scrap the old one anyway, trim the rubber from around the bottom of the handle, and you can see the little teeth holding it on.

I was able to roll back the rubber at the base of the handle to expose what looked like a plastic compression fit, i was just a bit wary about yanking it out because of the button, I'll give it a shot this weekend and see what happens.

also should i be highly concerned with what i am replacing it with, do i need to by an Authorized jeep part, or one of those $150 knobs from a custom shop, or can i just hit up the autozone for the $19.99 fake carbon fibre piece.
