SRS Light

I have a '98 323is. Resently the SRS light came on. Being somewhat a a mechanic, I ordered a scan tool to tell me the code (Peake Research). The code tells me that there is a short in the drivers side firing circuit. I pulled door panel off and got to the seat belt restraint but there are no wires going to or coming from the seatbelt device. What will cause this error? The computer can't know there is a problem if there is no sensor for it.

I had this problem after I had a collision, (air bags did not deploy) the only fix that my mech told me was to replace the restaint lock. He advised when they go out you need to replace them. It was replaced and the light reset after that.
