Manual transmission

I was wondering if it is possible to get a manual transmisson for a gp gtp. Not only would it make it faster, but it might take care of some of those transmission problems. Thanks in advance for the help.

which year GTP ?

They made manual transmission in some 1991 - early early 1993 SE/GTP's. They are few and far between though. They came with the Getrag 284 5spd tranny which had a share of its own problems, such as eating clutches, throw out bearings and what not. Needless to say they had so many problems with this transmission , they stopped using them and currently there is no way to even get parts for the tranny unless you find a junked one ( which is hard as fuck to find) or you send it back to Getrag in North Carolina. If you are talking 1997 - present Grand Prix's , there is no transmission out there that will even come close to bolting up to the motor for our cars. if you talk to some of the Fiero guys though , I think someone made a 6spd tranny for them and their 3800 S/C motors they swapped in. Dont even think about using that tranny because the Fiero is a whole different beast than the Grand Prix and it will never hold up. rant over , anymore questions , just post away and ill help ya.. - Mark

Re: which year GTP ?

There is a 5spd (and a 6spd) that are supposed to be hitting the market next summer for all 3800 powered cars....but don't cross your fingers.

I don't necessarily agree with your comment about making it faster though. There are auto GPs in the 11s (and 10s). And just because the tranny is a manual, doesn't mean the person shifting it can shift better than the computer can.

Re: Manual transmission

i heard some company in california has a trans that is manual for gp and for 97 and up but thats probably just not true, cause it sounds to good to be true. but the price of them would be around 2,500 to 3,000 dollars and includes all the change over stuff.

I was told from a reliable source that the tranny gonna be for 3800 powered Fiero's...not Grand Prix's...

It's being developed in a Fiero..but it will work in W-body cars. That's part of the reason why it's being made. The fieros don't have a large enough market to get such an item made, but if you include W-body cars (Lumina, GP, Cutlass, Intrigue, Regal), the market grows significantly don't ya think?

I heard it straight from the guy that is developing the transmission.
