1979 Transam Problem

I own a 1979 Pontiac transam with the oroginal 403. As of late When i brake easily into a stop it will shutoff on me, or if i stop suddendly it does ther same thing. It doesn't just shut off though, the hood scoop shakes alot liek its getting to much gas or not enough. I was wondering if any of u had any idea to what the problem is.

Re: 1979 Transam Problem

Sounds like knock. Have to check the carb out, maybe some carb cleaner.
Not sure what to tell you.

Re: 1979 Transam Problem

Hmmm I have a 79 TransAm with the 403 also and have not run into this problem, they are really good running engines. It runs fine otherwise?
I have had my timing off both ways but never had a problem like that, but chack it any way. My guess would be somthin wrong with the carb. Do you have the original Quadrapuke er Quadrajet carb on it mine was absolute garbage, It didn't do what your describing but it made the car run so bad that I went and got an Edelbrock carb and adapter for $260 from napa and now the car feals like it's fuel injected.
Well don't know if this helps any but its all I've got for ya. let me know if ya figure it out.
Good luck

Re: 1979 Transam Problem

Hey, I got a 79 403 Formula, and I its re-built with edelbrock carb and all the good stuff (although I think one of my lifters is making noise). The problem you are getting may just be the idle screw not allowing enough gas in, as you slow down, or your fuel/air mixture, mess with them on your carb.

I had this problem when I did a tune-up a year ago. The guy who did it, did not want my engine too loud so he screwed my idle screw and whenever I stop it would shut off.

I hope this helps. 79 trans ams are one of the most beutiful cars, even today.
