96 TDI won't go into 5th

I have 96 TDI wagon that will some times not shift into 5th. It goes into 3rd instead. Any clues, hints before I take to a mechanic.

Thanks Dave

Dave,
If you have not had the problem fixed, try checking the shift rods, sometimes they need to be readjusted. A transmission shop in Southern California charges about $70 for the job.
Good luck
