So what could it be, and where could I get it?

Well, I had been referred here because I heard that I could get some great help for my problem..

Basically I was given a '94 Galant free, where I simply have to restore it to operational condition. Thank god the engine was spared :D

But now it seems there's another problem that has to be taken care of.

See, right now when you put in the key to the ignition, sometimes it doesn't respond, and won't turn the car on. However, when it does start, sometimes it will also cause for the thing to not allow the key to go to the OFF position, and basically the key is stuck.

My grandfather is convinced it is the ignition switch (since personally I don't know jack about fixing cars), but the problem is that so far I've tried a few places locally, and this one place called parts-bin.com wouldn't give me an estimate of the price, and were going on about how it could be some kinda tumbler, or some assembly or whatnot for the electrical... either way, I just need the stupid ignition switch, or whatever it is that will fix that.

So what is it that would be the problem, and where can I go for replacing it cheap?

How about the condition of your actual key? Any problems unlocking doors or trunk too? Could be worn - excessive wear on just one cut of the key could give you the problems you describe. If it looks worn, spend $2 and have a new key cut first. Just my .02 - I usually start with the simplest things...

JThe key itself is fine, as it works perfectly on the doors and trunk.

And other people have tried it... the ignition switch (I finally figured out that's the proper name for the part) is basically fuxed.

Tried to get one off of a '96, only to find that it doesn't work. :(

It was just a thought...
