Question steerimg

On my 2000 Stratus SE steering: when I turn the steering wheel a "moaning" noise takes place. I have had this diagnosed before and they "dealer" said nothing was wrong. It seems to be getting worse. Any ideas??

Re: steerimg

fornt wheel drive Chryco's tend to wear out the power steering belt pretty fast. Once worn, it makes a moaning sound when turning a wheel ( many American cars suffer this as they get old). I find most Dodge dealrers avoid doing any work that might involve a warranty.

Replace the belt, tighten the pully, replace the PS fluid (not very expensive at all) and see what happens.

Re: steerimg

Our breeae was doing that and it was the pulleys were worn out so the belt was slipping seemed really strange to me. it sucked cuz sometimes the steering would get no power at all so it was like a manual rack.

It could be 2 things:

1) It could be the power steering pump or belt. That would cause the noise and sometimes a failure in steering or rough steering. In that case, there isnt much you can do except replace it.

2) If it is the moaning noise I have heard before from my car, try this. Take a can of WD-40 and spray it where the steering shaft goes through the firewall by the pedals. There is a rubber grommet/gasket there and it just needs to be lubed with some grease or WD-40. Spray it, turn the wheel back and forth to work it in there, and spray it again, then try that out. See if it makes it any better, if so, you can either just lube it more with something or you can purchase a replacement gasket for about $20 - $30 from your Dodge dealer. Good luck!
