Brakes on 91 Dodge Caravanryan217 11-17-2003, 03:42 PM I have recently installed new pads, rotors, and calipers onto a 91 Dodge Caravan. After I had everything installed took it for a spin for 5 minutes to make sure everything was ok. Pads were rubbing on the rotor and it caused a fire on driver side. No damage from the fire though. So, I loosen the guide pins some and the driver side is still hot. You can not touch the rim for more than 3 seconds or it will burn you. Can anybody give some advice on what I have done wrong? Thanks yale329 11-18-2003, 03:02 AM It sure sounds like your new brake caliper is binding. This can happen if they are rebuilt and not machined properely. Thats the only time i have seen brake pads smoke and rims heat up. You can try bleeding your brakes again, but i don't think it will help. If one side works you must have done it right. You will have to replace that pad now, if it is totally white from the heat. Good luck Wayne C.A proticus 11-18-2003, 04:39 AM you didn't mention whether the van wanted to pull to either direction while driving. is this the case? ryan217 11-18-2003, 10:46 AM you didn't mention whether the van wanted to pull to either direction while driving. is this the case? It doesn't want to pull. Just had new tire rods and alignment done. granguzs 11-19-2003, 12:28 AM you may have a stuck caliper, take the pads out and push the piston in with your hands, dont use a vise ryan217 11-19-2003, 06:15 AM It sure sounds like your new brake caliper is binding. Good luck Wayne C.A Thanks for the help. I replaced my old caliper. The people at the part store told me it could be the brake line. It may be the cause, even with the new caliper on, it still rubs real bad. bustedratchet 11-19-2003, 08:37 AM I agree with the parts man. The rubber hose not the steel line could have broken down internally causing a "check valve" effect. I would replace both rubber lines. nymike 12-31-2003, 02:53 PM Thanks for the help. I have had it happen. The rubber part of brake line that connects to caliper appeared fine. Apparently they collapse internally and do not allow the brake to release. I had it happen on a Ford Tempo and the dust cover around the rotor was plastic and ended up catching fire. I had to replace the new rotor as well.
