Question BMW fitted car mats

I've got an E36 325i convertible and I need to get a set of fitted car mats for it. I have noticed that I don't have the fittings on my car to accept the car mat hold down clips, so what do I do?
I went to BMW Milcars in Watford and they reckon that I need to line up a set of fitted mats inside my car and then punch (or rather 'cut') a hole through the carpet and I should find the 'holes' that the hold down clips will fit into! Do I believe them and cut up my carpet?

Just get the fitted car mats and forget about the clips that hold them in place. They really don't move around that much.
