XM Radio Upgrade

Has anyone looked into the SONY XM Radio ad on tuner? I have a 2001 325i with the HK system and want to get into this whole XM radio deal. Does anyone have have any experience with any XM product outside of the SONY stuff?

I've heard good things about Pioneer's setup.

How do you feel about paying a service fee to receive radio transmissions?

I think the $10 a month they are asking is very resonable. I don't look at the signal as a "regular" radio broadcast. XM is to Radio as Cable is to Broadcast TV. You're paying for a better selection and a consistent line up. There's many a time living in Philadelphia where the radio has nothing but commercials and I don't have my CDs with me. I there's 25 minutes of Opie and Anthony for every 35 minutes of advertising. So, being able to click on the "Alternative Music" channel and know I'm going to get a good stream of Alt Tunes, without some lousy Top 40 being thrown in there. That's just what I'd be looking for. Also, I'll be able to drive from NYC to Philly without having to scan every 20 miles to keep ESPN Radio, NPR, or things like that in tune.

The Pioneer system is the one I am looking at. If I end up doing it, I'll make sure to report back and put a web page up with some pictures.

Do the XM radio's also let you pick up regular FM radio? I would hate to lose the ability to listen to my local radio to find out what's happening.

These things work in conert with your current stereo system. I'm not exactly sure, but I suspect they work like these add on CD changers that use FM Modulation to send the signal directly into your head unit via the antenna. You set your radio to a specific station that the unit broadcasts at. So, you get both the XM and all your regular stations.

yes, that is right. I have a friend that just installed it in his Benz C240. He has the portable sony device. He sets his radio to 107.9, and then the Xm radio comes on. From what he says, the quality is amazing, and it was very easy to install
