90 Passat Grill

I have a 1990 passat with the stock (solid) grill and am looking for a way to get it running cooler.
Currently the engine temp climbs from the 195 or so it is at when moving to 230F when stopped for about 2 mins. I have checked and the cooling fan is kicking in and running and the thermostat opens fully at 195 like it is supposed to.

I am currently looking at putting in a mesh grill but am open to other alternatives

It is all stock with the exeption of the tranny which I had about replaced 2 years ago.

Thanks

Aaron, have you checked your rad for blockage ? You might consider flushing the entire cooling system as well.Try draining the rad and having a look inside, if it is the original rad chances are that the tubes could be corroded/blocked.Another thing is the water pump and belt.Check to make sure the belt tension is tight.
Good luck

Not sure, but you might check the thermal switch in the radiator. It is separate from the temp sender for the dash.
