I know that aluminium is by volume lighter, but if the steel is significantly stronger at high temperatures than you could use less of it. Somtimes the awanser is not how it appears on paper, just like the steel framed MiG 25 having a better airframe than it's American titanium counterparts.
Just think about this Viper Vs Speed 12. 8.0L engine vs 7.7L engine. 335mm rear tires vs 355mm tires. Aluminum engine vs steel engine. You would think that these cars weigh about the same since they share almost the same stats. but the speed 12 is about a thousand pounds ( about 454kg) lighter. And yes the speed 12 also uses a steel frame.
