My engine light came on several days ago. The deleaship said I need to replace the Evap Canister for $400. I own a Toyota Camry, 1999, with 53,000 miles. I have called around and it doesnt' seem like a lot of auto shops do this (some thought it was a young car to need this replacement) so I might have to pay top dollar at the dealership. One guy told me I probably only have to replace the gas cap for 7 dollars! Anyone have any insight? How important is the Evap canister? Do I have to replace it immediately, or even at all? Could it be the gas cap? Please help!

I have a 2001 camry. Last week the check engine light came on and I went to the dealership. They said the charcoal cannister and vacuum valve need to be replaced at $585!! Also worried about oil. I just had it changed and it's registering beyond the fill line on the dipstick. My car has only 56,000 miles on it.

Oh, forgot to write this. Anyone else with this same problem. I was on another site and lots of toyota people are complaining about these epa parts going and are out of warranty. Anyone with info. please help. I haven't fixed the charcoal cannister yet. The dealership said the car would be fine to drive.

I keep getting a "check engine"; "vsc off" and "vsc" codes; has been happening sporatically for several months; there are 4 codes related to emission system; I replaced gas cap, and finally a charcoal cannister; code stays off for anywhere from 50-100 miles, then lights come back on. Getting it backin garage soon. I have 90,000 miles on car;
-any toyota techs got suggestions? HELP!

Hi hampton girl 2,
I've driven the car another 3,000 miles and haven't replace d the charcoal cannister, even though the check engine light is on and then suddenly goes off. Now it's on again. Funny thing--it passed VA emissions with flying colors last week. I think Toyota is trying to rip consumers off with all of their codes going off. I am not going to fix it until I have to. There was a link somewhere where you can call national highway and safety commission to complain about these epa parts going bad --but I can't remember. I called and logged my complaint. If enough people do so, Toyota will have to extend warranties-just like honda did.

That's interesting. I was just getting ready to take the car back when the "check engine" & the VSC lights went off. So I'm driving it and holding my breath, expecting the lights to come back on. I'll write Toyota a letter and see how far I get. Thanks.

Thanks- I read a previous post "disconnect the battery for 30 minutes to erase the codes...".after 3 months with the check engine light on, & $40 at the Toyota dealer, told I needed the charcoal cannister, $400. I disconnected the battery 4 weeks ago, the light is still off.Seems that maybe the system is too sensitive- but at least the light is off, that's all it takes to pass the emissions test! thanks again, great site

The Toyota ECU is known to be very sensetive. If you have a CEL (check engine light), the simplest thing to do to verify it is to disconnect the battery terminal (either one of them) for at least 10 minutes to reset the ECU. That also erases any set CELs. If the CEL recurrs after your next drive or two, it means it's a "real" CEL and not just some fluke.

Some CELs require a two-cycle trip which means that you have to make two trips of "x" distance with a warm engine, with some speed and distance requirements mixed in, in order for the CEL to appear. So bear in mind that not seeing a CEL on your next trip doesn't mean you've fixed something or that it's gone away. Most of this is not unique to Toytoa, but is part of the OBDII specification which is the environment that these ECU's operate under.

If you have a code reader or scanner, you can see what code is being set and make an educated estimate of what needs to be done. Otherwise, you're at the mercy of your local grease monkey. :uhoh:

Guys,

Here is some good news regarding faulty charcoal canisters. I own a 98 Camry and I was quoted $690. by Dublin Toyota to fix this problem. But, I read somewhere in this forum (from username "Hurl") that the cost may be covered by Toyota's extended warranty. I double-checked this and infact, Toyota HAS extended the warranty to fix fauly charcoal canisters. I just called Dublin Toyota and reminded them of this obligation and they quckly agreed to honor the it!! I didn't have to pay a dime!!! I saved over $700 by spending just 15 minutes on the Internet.
Many thanks to username "Hurl" and this forum!!!
Cheers!
