i had posted earlier about going home one night and the car filled with a bit of pungent smoke as if plasitc was burning. well the car functions fine except that now the headlights and the illumination lights for the speedo/temp/fuel level wont work. any idea what specifically burned up? also the car makes a ding tone when the door is open much like it would IF there was a key left in the ignition or if you left the headlights on after you turned the motor off. trouble is there is no key in the ignition when it beeps and the headlight switch is off. the beeping doesnt bug me as it only happens when the door is open. I am obviously interested in getting headlight and guage illumination back. any thoughts?

Possible something shorted out in the multifunction switch. Are the twilight and dimmer switches working normally? Any fuses burned out?

Dimmers dont work. radio lights work. AC/Heater light works and the warning lights in the narrow row above the gauges light since my traction control is out i know this.
interior dome lighting works.

Check all fuses carefully.

if you having problems with the eletrical system, I would first make sure you have insurance to pay for the car if it burned up (at least comprehesive) and 2 if you want to find out the real problem take to someone who knows what to do.

A couple of years ago, I pulled into the garage, shut it off, got out and saw just a little smoke coming from under the hood on drivers side. I could smell wire insulation burning/melting, but it never happend again and did not affect anything operating as far as I could tell.
