I am a nob to the mr2 modifications as to what you can and cant do. I recently purchased a '91 MR2 with a Bomex body kit w/ 17" rims. The car has a blown motor and purchased it for $1,000. I was wondering if it would be worth the money to get a 2.2NA and turbo it? or just get a 3SGTE?

What are the reasons why i should/shouldnt turbo a 2.2?
What are the reasons why i should just get a 3SGTE?

Being that the 2.2 has a bigger displacement shouldn it produce more power in the long run?

This is just a toy car that i have in mind..... would like help from anyone with experince.

Thanks,
Adrian

i would go for the 3sgte rather than the 2.2...it may have bigger displacement but they made the turbo engine smaller for a reason...they are basically the same engine but they made the displacement smaller on the turbo therefore makeing the walls thicker so it can withstand more presure from the turbo.. Plus if you get a 3sgte and you decided that you wanted a 2.2 you could always just bore them out, but im not sure of what the consiquences could be...

The 3sgte is a much better engine.
It has a better head on it and is stronger over all.

Many people have blown up 2.2s trying to turbo them.. yes, there are folks who have done it successfully.

You can also stroke a 3sgte to 2.2 ...and not have to take anything away from the block.

Thanks for the previous responce ghetto7o2azn & JekylandHyde .....

I am going to get the a complete 3SGTE installed for $1200 from a friend probably by Mid-November. I have all the funds to do what I want to the car. I want to have a daily driver MR2 with 400hp+.........
How do I get there?
What should I modify before increasing the boost?

Once again I appreciate your responces and look forward from hearing from you.

Thanks

if the engine that has the blown head is a 2.2. i would get a 3sgte and not spend the money on a tranny just a ecu and all the other stuff that u need the 2.2 tranny just bolts on perfect to the 3sgte block. the gears maybe shorter but you have more tourque. thats what im doing with my TWO right now. Just looking for the right price. by the way if u can find one buy the 3rd gen motor. It come 245 stock.

The 3SGTE is a way better choice than the 2.2 NA. With expience the 2.2 has a better take off on the line but then the turbo one has that lag...AND!! you get that cool sound...you know what i'm talking about. vroooooom...PSH!!....vroooom... :loser:

if you were to Turbo a 2.2 liter
You need to lower the compression- Change rods, Pistons, Valves,
and Put a GenIII 3SGTE head on it
and then Turbo it.
It would be a serious Monster. But it can be done
Plus most turbo3SGTE owners know what they
are doing and don't much or any turbo lag at all.
unless your using a Big turbo
I don't have any lag on my Stock Turbo motor.
if you have it Floored over 3500-4k rpms its at full boost

Oh and on that link above
to the 10sec 5SFE MR2 yeah well it has a different set up on it now - on the dyno it did 310whpr at only 7lbs of Boost. Still needs more tunning but when its over 25+ psi - watch out.

www.huxracing.com check em out.

IF you want a daily driver over 300hp right away
Just save your money till you have enough
for a GenIII 3S motor much easier to get higher Hpwr out of it
