Want to start working on 95 SE - need help

2WD, SE, 2.2L 4 cylinder. I've been driving the truck for about three years now and have become increasingly disgusted with the lack of performance, and lack of style. Now I want to start working on it. Obviously, if I want to truly improve it, the engine needs to go, but I haven't the experience nor the money for this right now. Furthermore, I could sit here and ask you millions of questions about each little detail that I would like to learn. So instead I'll just ask if you know of any information sources where I could find all the general information I could need about this truck(obviously, I don't have the vehicle manual, and perhaps I have partly answered my question...) These sources could be on the internet or in books, it matters not, a little money spent on a good book will save me a hell of a lot in the long run. Any information or recommendations are appreciated.

go to a parts store like advanced auto or auto zone and get a haynes manual they dont cost much. if you want a ton of power go with a chevy 350 or 305. im kinda partial to the 305 even though alot of ppl dont like it. a new shortblock will probably run you about 2k. or you can go to a junk yard and find one and have them rip it out. but they also sell performance parts for the 2.2, like an exaust, flowmaster for example, or a cold air intake system. i think jet performance even sells power programmers and performance chips.
