I wouldn't recommend the powershifting idea. The automatic tranny in a 3SFE isn't strong at all. I've already been through 2 of them with my '88.
Even if you were to invest in a tranny oil cooler and a stall converter, you just buying time which will eventually be never enough. I thought the same thing (regarding powershifting) as you have. However, I do know that Harmer has had good success with his Gen2 auto. He installed a cooler for it, so you never know. You might want to check with him.
