MKIII no-turbo head rebuild issues

I am taking the head off to fix couple of broken spark plugs, to replace the head gasket and to learn while doing it. So far I took off the following: air delivery, throttle body, air intake runners, distributor, timing belt, alternator, camshaft covers. Unbolted the exhaust manifold. The head is practically loose and free, except for...

Issues and questions:
1) I did not starve the fuel in the fuel lines (could not run the motor).

After taking off the fitting below the intake manifold the fuel drained from the FI, but keeps on tricking from the fuel pump, I think. How much fuel is there until it finishes, or is it all the fuel from the tank (14 gal)?

How you take the FI apart to remove the cylinder head.

2) Electrical harness. It is old, dry-rotted. Can it be replaced? How you go about disconnecting the sensors under the intake. The wires run right-thru the intake openings, cannot skip that step.

If not for Fuel injection and couple of wiring connectors taking the head off would not be much of the issue.

I got 1/2 gal. of fuel to drain before tightening the fitting again. That stuff stincks up the place too much just to let it drain. Any idea how much fuel is the in the system?

Where are you taking the fitting apart at? Just take it apart before the motor mount, then plug that up with something. The harness that goes through the intake is usually taken off at the ECU, since your just pulling the head you have to take the intake mani off, just the TB and plenum, not the middle runners attached to the head. You can replace the wiring harness but it's alot cheaper to just fix the crispy wires and rewrap it all, go ahead and do the knock sensor rewire too while it's all apart. If your putting on a MHG you really need to have both surfaces milled or lapped, unless there very close perfect already. Lots of people have done a HG job without removing the block and just had the head prepped for a MHG and had no problems, but lots of others have, and reblown the HG. If your going with a factory toyota type then it'll be fine as long as it's not pitted any, since you've got a n/a you won't really need the extra assurance of a MHG anyway.

thanks!

I will try to find a bolt that will plug up the fuel line in place of the hollow banjo fitting.

I will post the progress as I see how bad are the head & block surfaces.

If you have any other tips, you are most welcome, most Supra people will benefit as almost everyone will come across head-gasket issue. Of course you can spend $1K and have a mechanic do it, but how much fun is that?

That the one on the motor mount? If so it's about even with the tank on level ground, maybe slightly lower. By the way heres the BHG FAQ from supraforums, lots of helpful info there http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=85914&highlight=BHG+FAQ

Thanks again,

That's a really good resource. I do realize that there have been a lot written about head gaskets.
