Question '74 Galant GB/GC engine swap

I own a '74 GB/GC Chrysler Valiant Galant 1.6l and am wanting to carry out an engine swap with either a 2l sigma engine or a 1.8l lancer engine or 1.6 DOHC lancer engine but am not sure if any of these will "drop straight in" with no dramas on my part so any info anyone could provide me with would be greatly appreciated ......... Hey Mate!

Hey mate...
I own a 1973 GB Galant myself and I'm in the same position as you. I'm going to put in a Sigma 2.6 in. I'm using an Astron 2 because I want to add efi to it at a later date. I'm fortunate to have some info on these cars as my father rallied them in the 70's. Let me know how it's going. If you need to know anything, I can ask around.

I too have a GC but mine is a coupe. I have also previously owned a GB sedan. From memory the only motor you will be able to get in there are saturn/ sirrus engines. the astron will not fit. The 1.8 saturn motor is a fantastic upgrade and well worth the effort. This would be the easiest bolt in job. Just keep in the back of you mind that the 1.6L Satrun is a JAP patterned block thus if you have a GC or GD (longer bonnet more room) and go for the astron motor that you get an auto block not the manual otherwise you will not be able to use your gearbox. The JAP 5 speed (found behind the astron 2000) will also bolt in with a little modification (to hole in trans tunnel) these are regarded as stronger options than the BW 5 speed found behind the astron 2.6 in the sigmas, which are actually a different pattern.

hey oldn64,

I am unsure about your info about an astron engine fitting in to a ga-gb. I have read stories of two guys who put them into la-lb lancers which are not all that different. I know they are not as easy as a bolt in job 1.8 though. My father rallied against a guy called David Officer (he won the Aust. Rally championship in 1985) who ran a GA galant with a specially prepped astron. The interesting thing is that it was a specially made 2.4lt engine, as far as i know it was a mixture of a 2.0 and a 2.6. I have been told it was very quick and loved to rev!
