Post Twin Cam perks

I'm going to be inheriting a Saturn with a Twin Cam engine, now my question to all you Saturn enthusiasts is what are the perks of having a Twin Cam engine? (i.e. won't burn up as easily as a Single Cam perhaps?)

mainly, more HP and torque. but... the twin cam models also have more options (4-wheel disks, foglights, higher top speed, handling, etc.) the SOHC has two perks over the DOHC, price and better MPG.

OK... The number one bigest advantage of a DOHC engine is the high rev potential. The DOHC engine is a design that came from the race track. The DOHC alows the egine to rev to high RPM's abround 7-8 is normal before you shift under WOT. (wide open throttle). This high rev makes for a very high horsepower engine. Most of the saturns have very high horspower in the top end, which makes them a prime car for a turbo charger. The Saturn 1.9L DOHC engine stock puts out 120-125HP. A stock civic puts out 87HP. Hee hee.

Wildside is telling you right. The only thing I might add is make sure you check the oil often. The dohc motor tends to use more oil than the sohc.

Yes, I have seen that on these engines oil consumption is a major issue. If you dont keep an eye it, you will end up running on no oil at all. I run Fully synthetic 10-30 in mine. Although you may never see any smoke out of the tailpipe, they do burn trace amounts. This adds up over time.

The twin cams also respond well to basic bolt on modification... intake, header, high flow cat, cat back exhaust. You also get a bigger front sway bar and a rear sway bar (the single cams have no rear sway bar at all). With basic bolt on mods my 95 SL2 ran 15.4 1/4mi with a full interior and was a competitive STS autox car.

Cheers,
Brian

Re: Twin Cam perks

Thanks for the info guys, too bad I don't have that Saturn anymore, sounds like I really could have done some pretty awesome things to it. My Aunt took it back from me and gave it to my Uncle because he hated the gas mileage their Blazer got, when their Blazer was stolen they took it back completely and I was forced into a '86 Ford Ranger against my will. I would have preferred some sort of S-10, but my Grandma was out to buy what best suited her, not me; atleast it runs though. Thank you all, I will take this into mind in the coming years when I plan on tuning all sorts of cars.

Saturns DOHC only revs to 6500 RPM. Fuel cut on manual's is 6750, and on some auto's it'll rev out to 7000-7500 till it shifts.

Re: Twin Cam perks

yeah i had a 94 saturn sc2 and i had about 136000 miles on it and it used a quart of oil every 350-400 miles. so check oil often and it fluctuates alot. just beware. its not as bad on the newer ones the started fixin them better and after 2000 they dont use much oil at all if any.
